During my life, I determined many times I will live a healthier life. I set up a long list of things I was going to change such as losing weight, getting rid of unhealthy foods, moving more, doing exercises regularly and so on.
After setting up my list, I always felt myself full of power that I was going to do it. However, as the time went, I gave up more and more from my list and at last I achieved almost nothing.
After several attempts, I decided to set up smaller goals and I would change my lifestyle step by step. There is no need to rush, you know, “Rome was not built in a day”
During the last year, I set up and reached many smaller goals. As a result, I lost 35 pounds, stronger and leaner than ever before. Besides, the health problems, I used to have such as high blood pressure and backache, are over. I feel myself mentally and physically much better.
If you usually set up high goals and you fail, I recommend you to follow my advice and set up simpler, more achievable goals.
Here are some small goals you can start with.
Walking seems to be a useless activity, but it is definitely the healthiest way to improve your health and burn calories. Take 20-30 minutes daily to have a walk and increase the distance gradually. More about walking for weight loss here.
Not having breakfast was the biggest problem of mine. For a decade, I did not eat anything at all in the morning. The first meal I got was about midday when I stuffed myself.
This was a huge mistake. Having a complete breakfast rich in beneficial carbs, protein, vitamins and minerals are crucial for a healthy lifestyle.
Switch to Whole Grain Products
If you want to lose weight and being healthy you should switch from refined grains to whole grains. Fortunately, there are many products out there. The taste is the same, but the health benefits are much better. You can read more nutrition tips here.
Consume Green Salad
I did not use to be a salad consumer, it was just another bad habit of mine. Nowadays I make my own salad from veggies I like and I make my own low fat, sugar-free and healthy dressing. I usually have salad with lean meat, which is now my favorite meal.
Eat Meat, but Low Fat Ones
Meat is important for healthy nutrition since they are high in protein and other beneficial components. The problem comes when we consume meats which are high in fat. Purchase lean pork, beef and poultry. You can make your dishes more juicy by using olive oil.
The smaller the bag, bottle, plate or package the less you will consume. I used to pick the largest plate, make a big pile and I ate up everything. Small portions help a lot to consume less.
Exercise & Move Regularly
Working out frequently is crucial if you want to be fit and healthy. Find an activity that you really like. I used to pump iron, but I did not like it very much, that is why I gave up several times. After trying a few fitness activities, I turned to calisthenics and boxing. I do workouts 3-5 times a week.
You can do a lot for your health even if you do yoga, pilates or just work outside in your garden. The aim is to move!
Drink More Water
Another essential step you should do for your health is to drink more water. Most of the people do not drink enough. An average man needs approximately 2.5 – 3 liters of water daily.
