If you are interested in losing weight, burning fat you may have already read a lot about this topic. You may now know that eating correctly and taking in the proper nutrients is vital. One critical part of your diet is how much and what sorts of fatty acids you consume.
Generally, if we hear the word fat, we think “It is bad! I should not eat any at all! Eating it will make me fatter and puts more pounds on me!”
This is a big misconception since there are bad and essential fatty acids. Did you know that there are ones which even help to lose weight and makes you healthy?
In this post, I would like to give more information about the good and bad fats. By knowing the difference between them you will be able to adjust your diet better and you can get rid of foods which contain the unwanted ones.
But first what is a fatty acid?
In chemistry, particularly in biochemistry, a fatty acid is a carboxylic acid with a long aliphatic tail (chain), which is either saturated or unsaturated….Fatty acids are important sources of fuel because, when metabolized, they yield large quantities of ATP. Many cell types can use either glucose or fatty acids for this purpose.
There are three main types. These are saturated, unsaturated and trans fat.
Saturated fatty acids
They mainly comes from animal sources such as beef, pork and fatty poultry. This kind of fat is solid at room temperature. This is the fat you can see on various meats at the butcher’s. What is the disadvantage of it? It is high in bad cholesterol.
To tell the truth, I have read quite a lot recently about saturated fatty acids. Some scientists say we should avoid it, others say it is essential. In my opinion, there is no need to get rid of it completely and it is not as harmful as it stated.
Watch the video below learn why saturated fats are not so bad.
What are unsaturated fatty acids?
These sorts of fats come from plant resources like sunflower, olives, various nuts and so on. The advantage of them is that they do not contain cholesterol. While saturated ones are solid at room temperature, unsaturated fats are liquid, just think about vegetable oils. This type of fat can be broken down into monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats.
This kind of fats have several health benefits, a good example is the omega-3 fatty acid, which besides many others, help to prevent heart diseases. Generally, sea fish are high in omega-3.
Difference between saturated and unsaturated fatty acids
And now some chemistry to discover what is the difference between them. 🙂 All sorts of fats largely built up from carbon and hydrogen atoms. In saturated ones, all carbon atoms link to each other as well as to hydrogen atoms.
While in unsaturated ones not all carbons are bonded to hydrogens, but the carbons bond to each other double time.
What are trans fats?
These are the inventions of the mankind which are happen to be the worst. How is it produced? In factories, they process the unsaturated fats adding hydrogen, this is the method called hydrogenation.
Margarine is a great example. How it is it made? They use sunflower oil which is processed by hydrogenation, the margarine is ready. The sad thing is that these sorts of margarines are promoted as healthy foods, but they just cause the opposite.
If you eat too much from trans fats, sooner or later you will have some sorts of health problems. Trans fats are responsible that there are so many overweighted people in the modern world. In these countries, people consume too much processed foods which are loaded with it.
Watch the video below for more details.
I found a great comment which I absolutely agree with.
The food industry is the source of all food evils. Back in great grandma’s day cancer and heart disease rates were very low, they used animal fat (lard) to fry. Cane sugar was the preferred sweetener, now it’s the cheaper high fructose corn syrup. The food industry found they could make 25% more money if they used trans fats in their products. The food industry doesn’t care about your health, their focus is how many billions they can make off you. The media should expose these big food companies and their motives, embarrassing them and their profit motives, causing consumers to avoid their products. Thus causing healthy changes.
What is the difference between saturated and trans fats?
Saturated fats increase the bad cholesterol called LDL and increases a little the good one called HDL. Trans ones boost the level of LDL much more plus it decreases the level of HDL drastically. That is why it is so bad.
Finally here is a chart with the mentioned fats and some typical foods.
I hope, now you understand better what is the difference between the types of fatty acids. The best fats are the unsaturated ones, though some saturated fat is necessary, as well. You must avoid trans fats as much as you can. How you can do that? Stop eating processed foods!
